Learn Thai adjectives with the prefix น่า /nâa/

First of all, you have to learn the main prefix ‘น่า’ /nâa/ which has no direct meaning but it could mean something similar to “seem” in English.

Normally, this prefix ‘น่า’ /nâa/ put in the front of a verb to change the verb to an adjective with related meaning.

น่า /nâa/ + Verb = Adjective

น่ารัก /nâa-rák/ means “lovely” as an adjective.
 
  • น่า /nâa/ is a prefix
  • รัก /rák/ means to love
  • น่า /nâa/  + รัก /rák/ (v.) = adorable or lovely (adj.)
    As the word means to love.

Here, it comes to some commonly used adjectives with the prefix น่า /nâa/ as examples of how to use it.

1. น่ารัก /nâa-rák/ = lovely – cute

  • รัก /rák/ = to love (v.)

Example

  • ลูกสาวของคุณน่ารักจัง
    /lûuk-sãaw-khõrng-khun nâa-rák jang/
    = Your daughter is cute.

2. น่าเกลียด /nâa-klìad/ = ugly – improper

  • เกลียด /klìad/ = to hate (v.)

Example

  • อย่าทำแบบนี้ น่าเกลียด
    /yàa tham baeb-nii, nâa-klìad/
    = Don’t do like this! It’s improper.

3. น่ากิน /nâa-kin/ = looks appetizing

Thai food is appetizing

  • กิน /kin/ = to eat (v.)

Example

  • ผัดไทยร้านนี้น่ากินมากๆ
    /phadthai ráan-nií nâa-kin maak-maak/
    = Phadthai (Thai dish) of this restaurant looks delicious.

4. น่าเบื่อ /nâa-bùea/ = boring

  • เบื่อ /bùea/ = to be bored of something (v.)

a little thai lady is bored.

Example

  • หนังเรื่องนี้น่าเบื่อมาก
    /nãang-rûeang-nii nâa-bùea mâak/
    = This movie is so boring.

5. น่ารำคาญ /nâa-ram-khaan/ = annoying

  • รำคาญ /ram-khaan/ = to be annoyed (v.)

Example

  • หัวหน้าของฉันน่ารำคาญที่สุด
    /hua-nâa khõorng-chãn nâa-ram-khaan thîi-sùd/
    = My boss is super annoying.

6. น่าสนุก /nâa-sà-nùk/ = looks fun

  • สนุก /sà-nùk/ = funny (v)

Example

  • เกมส์ใหม่น่าสนุก
    /geem-mày nâa-sà-nùk/
    = The new game looks fun!

Note*

The word น่า /nâa/ might sound like the word ‘หน้า’ /nâa/ which mean face and page in Thai language. both /น่า/ and /หน้า/ are homophones.
