Essential Vocabulary

The keyword of this topic is the word ‘fresh market’. In Thai, we say ‘ตลาดสด’ (tà-làad-sòd).

  • ตลาด (tà-làad) = market
  • สด (sòd) = fresh

There are also other words that compounds the word ตลาด (tà-làad)

  • ตลาดนัด (tà-làad nád) = weekend or night market
  • ตลาดปลา (tà-làad plaa) = fish market
  • ตลาดมือสอง (tà-làad mue-sõong) = second hand market

Grammar Note: Classifier

Classifier is a unit of noun and doesn’t exist in English. In Thai, when we mention an amount of something, we need classifier. 

Structure: Noun + amount + classifier

For example

  • ส้มหนึ่งลูก (sôm nùeng lûuk) = an orange
  • ปลาสองตัว (plaa sõng tua) = 2 fish.
  • มะม่วงหนึ่งกิโลกรัม (má-mûang nùeng ki-loo-kram) = a kilogram of mangoes.

Please note that, each noun has different classifier, but there are groups of nouns that use the same classier.

  • ลูก (lûuk) used for fruits, any round-shape things like football, basketball
  • ตัว (tua) used for animals and anything with legs or arms like shirt or plants.

วันนี้แม่ชวนฉันไปตลาดสดตอนเช้ามึด ไปซื้อของมาทำข้าวกลางวันและข้าวเย็น ที่ตลาดสดมีร้านค้ามากมาย มีทั้งร้านขายเนื้อ ร้านขายปลา และร้านขายผักและผลไม้ ร้านขายเนื้อส่วนใหญ่ขายเนื้อหมูและเนื้อไก่ แต่วันนี้เราไม่ซื้อเนื้อเพราะเราจะทำเมนูอาหารทะเล  เลยซื้อปลาหมึก หอย และกุ้ง อย่างละ 1 กิโลกรัม เพื่อมาทำเมนูยำทะเล ฉันชอบกินผักมากๆ ฉันเลยไปซื้อผักที่ร้านขายผัก ฉันซื้อผักกาดขาว แครอท กระเทียม ต้นหอม และเห็ดหอมไว้ทำผัดผักรวม ซื้อพริกขี้หนูมา 1 กรัมเพราะฉันชอบกินเผ็ด หลังจากนั้นฉันไปร้านขายผลไม้ แม่ฉันซื้อแอปเปิ้ล 5 ลูก ส้ม 2 กิโลกรัม และองุ่นอีก 1 กิโลกรัม ราคารวมแค่ 250 บาทถูกกว่าที่ห้างเยอะ ซื้อของเสร็จแล้วฉันก็กลับบ้านเตรียมพร้อมทำอาหาร
